Growing up, Lela would always say what a pretty young lady I was. She hadn't been doing well for quite some time so we didn't have many conversations between us. The last time I saw her, about a week ago, she looked great. She was so talkative and fun to be around. She asked what I wanted to do when I graduated college. I told her I wanted to work with children with disabilities and to get them whatever accommodations they need to be successful in school, future jobs, or just day to day tasks. Her face lit up and she started telling me about the children she had worked with who were disabled or special needs. I could tell she truly loved what she had done and still missed the children. I had never heard her talk about herself before. I'm glad I listened. She saw that I had painted my jean jacket and asked about it. I showed pictures of shoes that I and a friend had painted. She asked if I would paint Redbirds on some shoes for her. I wish I could've. Lela loved her Redbirds. With all of her past health concerns, I am grateful that she was able to pass peacefully without any pain.

Just a week ago today I had dinner with Lela and Johnny. She looked the best I have seen in a long time. We laughed and hugged. A precious memory!
