Betty was born in Macon, Georgia to Dorothy and Jimmy Mims on September 23, 1946. She graduated from Evans High School in Evans, Georgia in June 1964. She received her degree with honors in Mathematics from Augusta College in June 1967. There, she met her future husband and love of her life, Carl Echols who she married in June 1969. After college she returned to teach math at her alma mater, Evans High School. When her daughter Melinda was born, Betty took on her most demanding role as a full-time Mom. When her daughter went to college Betty went back to work at Federated Department stores in their Payroll department until 1999.
Betty embraced her life whatever happened. Her warm smile and laugh will be remembered by all who knew her. She never hesitated to send or post a joke or a cute animal picture that she felt would brighten someone’s day. She loved sports from her online golf community to a final act of cheering on UGA to a Rose Bowl victory. She recently spent her Mom’s 90th birthday with close family in Athens, Georgia before Christmas enjoying their company and Southern food but unfortunately no oysters this trip.
Betty is preceded in death by her father Jimmy Mims of Athens, Georgia.
Betty is survived by her husband Carl; her mother Dorothy Mims of Athens, Georgia; and her daughter Melinda Hilsenbeck of San Francisco, California.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to her local animal shelter, Animal Friends Humane Society of Hamilton, Ohio or Bay Area Young Survivors of San Francisco, California.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the West Chester Hospital Intensive Care Unit for their kindness and support in her final days. Condolences maybe left on Betty’s online guestbook at www.websterfuneralhomes.com
