David was born on December 14, 1950 to Henry Farthing Jr. and Betty Noble-Farthing in Hamilton, Ohio. At the age of four, he met the love of his life when Alene Lovins brought the newborn Vickie over to meet his mother. He grew up exploring the banks of the Great Miami river which inspired his life-long love of fishing. At the age of 14 he underwent open heart to correct a birth defect. The surgery had a 20% success rate and he beat those odds. Vickie was the only girl he was ever interested in and was eventually permitted to marry her in 1970. They welcomed Lora in 1971 and Brandon in 1973. He was so proud to have had two fire-cracker babies, the kids having been born on Labor Day and July 4th, respectively. In 1973, fearing that his life was headed down the wrong path, he agreed to attend church with Vickie. They attended New Miami First Church of God where he gave his life to God. During this time, he was mentored by Pastor Earl Harmon and felt the call to the ministry. David’s first pastorate was Elizabethtown First Church of God. He then served at Peebles First Church of God, Freedom Chapel, and Park Layne Church of God. He felt it a special honor to return and serve at New Miami First Church of God for a time before retiring from the ministry. He studied at Anderson College. Throughout his ministry, he served the church in a variety of ways. He and Vickie led the Youth Ministry at New Miami for a time. Camp Meetings at Camp Lebanon held very special memories for David. A talented vocalist and guitarist, he ministered not only through his sermons, but through music as well. Throughout his ministry, he'd often lead the worship music, play guitar, sing solos and direct the choir. Nights with the family just pickin' and grinnin' instilled a love of music in his children. David was a prolific writer, drawing inspiration from the natural world, his love for family, and his deep faith. He always had a nice pen on hand for when inspiration would strike. There are hundreds of songs, poems, books, and musings to his credit. To support his family, he worked in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry and mechanics. He could fix just about anything. Many a problem was solved through his creative engineering and problem solving. Whatever the problem, he had a tool for that, and if he didn't have it, he'd make it. In his off time, he enjoyed fishing, boating, bowling and classic TV. He loved going out to eat, teasing waitresses and cutting up with anyone who'd engage with his antics. He loved to laugh. David was predeceased by Henry Farthing Jr (father), Betty Noble (mother), Tracie Farthing (sister), Cheryl Egan (sister), Lorie Farthing (sister), Brandon Farthing (son). He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Vickie, Daughter Lora, Granddaughters Keighley (Chris) Gargrave, Alexis Smith and Aidan Damron. Grandsons Mac Damron and Chance Farthing.
