Condolences

I can not think of growing up without not thinking of Coach. Of course we all had our first memories of him at the pool always with a smile. We went to church together until I went away to college and I always looked forward to seeing him on my visits back to oceana. He truly was a humble man of God. My brother loved him as a coach - he instilled a lot of values into the players. He was my chemistry teacher in high school - he was always patient with his class and really wanted us to learn. I feel privileged to have known Coach Gilliland for almost 50 years and his memory will live on in the hundreds of people who he touched with his kindness. my condolences to his family , especially his grandson and my friend, Allen.

Coach Gilliand was one of the great influences in my coaching career, as well as a terrific teacher, educator. A few years ago I told him what a influence he had been on me, and true to his humble, Christian personality, he was in shock when I told him. I don't think he had any idea of how much he meant to so many people whose lives he touched. I was so glad I got a chance to tell him how I felt before he left us for his heavenly home. His demeanor never changed, regardless of circumstances, and that was part of what made him so great. Earth has lost a great man, but Heaven has gained one of God's best. Prayers for the family and multiple friends. .
