Geneva “Jo” Elizabeth Hoover (nee LeVan), age 102, of Fairfield, Ohio, passed away on December 18, 2022. She was born on June 17, 1920, in Montgomery, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Ezra and Pearl (Dunn); and sister to Nelson, Reba, Rose, Kenneth and Doris. In 1942, she married Clayton “Bud” Hoover in San Antonio, Texas. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark; survived by her loving children, Fred, Andrea (Larry) and Jeanne (Bill); was a doting grandma to Stacey (Eric), Mindy (Craig), Amy (Jason), Adam (Zoee) and Jacquelyn (Steven); and dear JoJo to 14 great-grandchildren – Jacob, Adelynne, Alex, Max, Ben, Anna, Lauren, Julia, Will, Kennedy, Rowan, Paige, Quinn, and Scarlett. She was a beloved aunt and cousin, and a deeply treasured friend. In fact, for more than a century, she had such an impact on so many, that most would cite her as one of the most special people they’d ever known. Living to 102 years (102 ½, to be exact!), it would be easy to focus on the remarkable length of Geneva’s life. But that would only tell part of her story – for as extraordinary as the quantity of her years, what is most incredible is how she lived them. And if you asked her how she did so, she would simply say she was blessed. She was a secretary by trade, but held many unofficial roles and advanced her many talents in countless ways. She was a teacher, an artist, a chef, a humanitarian, and a traveler. She was always up for an adventure and filled with gratitude. And at her core, she was a woman of deep faith. She delighted in connection with others; and she would beam with pride whenever she had the chance to talk about her greatest blessing, her family. She wore it as a badge of honor that she was with her family every Christmas (even COVID couldn’t stop us) and as we expanded in size, she never forgot a birthday or what made each of her 14 great-grandchildren extra special. Perhaps most importantly, Geneva always saw the best in everyone. When you were in her presence, she had an innate gift for making you feel like you were the only person in the world. She was truly selfless with her time and love. Harriet Beecher Stowe said, “Once in an age, God sends to some of us, a friend who loves in us, not the person we are, but the angel we may be.” Never has a quote been more fitting, nor a person more deserving of its attribution. Geneva was truly an angel among us and will continue to guide us in ways both subtle and overt. Our hearts are breaking because we can’t fathom a physical world without her, but we know there’s a happy reunion in the heavens and she is surrounded by love…likely enjoying her favorite ice cream. The simple joys were all she ever wanted and now eternally will enjoy. We love and already miss you “bunches.” A memorial service will be held Friday, December 23, at 10 a.m. at the Vineyard Cincinnati Church in the Chapel, 11340 Century Circle E, Springdale, OH 45246. The family is planning to hold a celebration of life in Pennsylvania in the spring (details to be shared at a later date). In lieu of flowers, Geneva’s family asks that you honor her memory with a donation to the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, https://www.stjude.org/ or a charity that is meaningful to you.
