John C. Phomsouvanh, 53, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away on March 21, 2025, at Mercy Hospital Fairfield. He was born in Vientiane, Laos, and had lived in Cincinnati since 1980. John is survived by his three sisters, Hatsady Sundara (Bouariphanh), Manysavanh Chayavon, and Thipmontha Hunt (Andrew); five nieces, Caroline Dejos (Josef), Karen Sundara, Chasity Stroupe (Jeremy), Liliana Hunt, and Violet Hunt; and one nephew Eric Sundara, three great nephews Noah Troche, Knox Troche and Devanh Dejos. He was preceded in death by his parents, Khamphiou Phomsouvanh and her husband Bouasy Phomsouvanh. John fled the communist regime in Laos in November 1979 when he was 8 years old with his father, mother, and sisters. His father Bouasy organized an escape by hiring three people to escort their family across the Mekong River to Thailand. They could only take the clothes they wore and some money, leaving all the rest of their belongings and their home behind. John spent eleven months in a refugee camp with his family in Thailand before making the journey to Ohio in October 1980. They were sponsored by Sandy and Ed Stanley and the First Baptist Church of Greenhills, Ohio. He graduated in 1990 from Greenhills High School and was a standout soccer player on the school’s varsity team. He attended college at the University of Cincinnati - Raymond Walters. John held many jobs, including modeling, bartending, and working at various restaurants. He enjoyed spending time with family, riding his bicycle, attending church faithfully, and working on his car. He will be deeply missed. A celebration of life service is scheduled for Saturday, April 5th, at 10:30 AM at Gracehills Church located at 11195 Winton Road Greenhills, Ohio 45218. A reception will be held, immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Gracehills Church (https://www.gracehills.church/give ) in John’s memory.
